Elephants have been recognized by ecologists as ‘Ecosystem Engineers’. These majestic pachyderms not only help transport seeds across great distances, but also help create a more diverse and abundant ecosystem– by modifying the forest, elephants create habitats for small insects, amphibians, and reptiles, and help them proliferate, which in turn allows the population of birds and larger animals, which feed on these smaller animals, to grow.
In Bhutan, elephants have always been special. Depicted on murals across the country in temples and monasteries, the elephant is the largest of the four harmonious friends who teach an important lesson of interdependence, deeply valued by the Bhutanese.
In Buddhism, the elephant has a special place as well- Queen Maya dreamt of a white elephant in her womb, before she discovered that she was with child- and her son, Prince Siddhartha, would grow up to become Buddha Sakyamuni.
Elephants are protected in Bhutan, and their numbers are slowly increasing, due to careful, dedicated work by forestry personnel.
