Rice is an important staple in Bhutan, and an integral part of the Bhutanese cuisine. Rice is often eaten with all three meals in a day, besides being made into a variety of snacks and potent wine. It is used in religious ceremonies and found at all important occasions.
Growing rice is backbreaking work- the fields must hold water, so slopes are terraced before it can be grown. Saplings have to be transplanted in spring, and weeding has to be done- traditionally thrice, before harvest in Autumn. The harvested paddy then needs to be threshed, dried and milled, before it becomes rice. For centuries, the growing of rice brought our communities together as they helped each other in the fields, singing to make their work easier.
Our August calendar, featuring a beautiful photograph from His Majesty’s visit to Paro Wochu, celebrates the important work of the farmers, who are in the middle of weeding their lush green summer paddy fields.
We have designed beautiful calendars featuring Their Majesties to be used as wallpaper for your laptops, computers and smartphones. You can download the calendars, which will be released every month, for free.
